What to do if your vehicle is damaged in a flood or storm?

If the flooding and the cyclone has caused significant damage to your vehicle, here are some steps you can take.

1. If your vehicle has suffered water damage, do not start the car

Do not attempt to turn the ignition on and drive it, as it could cause further damage. Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical damage and make sure it’s in a safe location, away from water.

2. Assess the damage and take photos

It’s good to keep a record of everything related to the flood or storm damage, including the date and location. Good places to look for damage include the spare wheel compartment, under the carpet mats, headlights, and the air filter.

3. Contact your insurance company

You should do this as soon as you can and see how much is covered. They may advise you on the steps to take and give you instructions on how to file a claim. The photos that you took of the damage will come in handy as you will need to provide them to your insurance company.

4. Dry and clean out your car

This will prevent mould from developing. Open the windows so that air can circulate and use a wet-dry vacuum to remove any remaining water or debris. You can use a dehumidifier or air conditioning to dry out the interior of the vehicle.

5. Get it inspected

It may be best to take your vehicle to an auto body shop or mechanic for further help. It’s important to take immediate action to ensure your safety and that the problem doesn’t escalate.

6. Consider whether to repair or replace

Depending on the extent of the damage, it may be more cost-effective to replace your vehicle rather than repair it.
