Finding and buying a natural pine tree is expensive and even the artificial varieties can cost more than you might like. So instead, think beyond the pine this Christmas.

Popsugar has an excellent series of alternative cheap Christmas trees to try this year, most of which need little more than time and creativity. This includes:

  • A tree made of boxes
  • A tree made entirely from greenery
  • A tree made from books

And many more. Check out the full list here. But don’t be afraid to get a little imaginative yourself as well.

Tinsel, paper snowflakes, wreaths – oh my. There’s a real cornucopia of Christmas decorations to put up around the home. But before you rush to the shops to buy some, consider making them yourself instead. It’s a great activity to do with the kids, and you’ll save some dollars to boot.

If you’re a dab hand at DIY, Midwest Living has a few project ideas for inspiration and guidance. Alternatively, if you’d prefer to keep it simple this Christmas, try these ideas over at Woohome instead.

Between the two of them, you’ll find budget decoration ideas to really bring Christmas alive; everything from advent calendars to Christmas tree baubles.

Once the tree is up and the tinsel is sparkling, it’s time to tickle the other senses.

Did you know that smell and sound is more associated with memory than sight is? You can create memories that last by making sure your home smells and sounds like Christmas.

Let’s start with the music. YouTube and Spotify are excellent free resources to get the carols going – and don’t be afraid to use free trials for uninterrupted tunes this Christmas either. Here’s a great Christmas playlist for Youtube to get you started. If your internet is spotty, it’s time to bust out the CDs or ask a family member to bring theirs.

Then there’s the scents of Christmas. You don’t have to wait until dinner’s in the oven to fill up your home with the smell of spices. Simply put a pot of water on the stove and throw in some cinnamon to get the festive season started. Just make sure you turn it off after it’s come to a boil!
